Scientific Drawing — techniques & practices

To provide participants with foundational scientific illustration techniques needed to become autonomous in their drawing practices associated with their work activity and scientific research.

Objectives

Subjects covered

Traditional techniques : Presentation of materials, observational and life drawing, line drawing with graphite, drawing with a camera lucida microscope attachment, the norms for scientific illustrations, ink techniques, rendering techniques: values, highlights and shadows (hatching/crosshatching, stippling, eyelashing);

Digital techniques : Introduction to and practice with materials, digitizing pencil and ink drawings, optimizing scan performance using a flatbed scanner, using raster-based software for retouching and vector tools for selecting and finalizing artwork: layout, parameters, legends, document formats and printing.

Validation

Final evaluation in this course will be determined by the finishing of assignments, with no major qualitative criterion.

Practical Informations

From 23 to 25 September 2020 — TP BIO & INFO Rooms — M.N.H.N. Site du Jardin des Plantes.

Schedule: 9am to 5pm, with 1 hour lunch break (i.e. 7 hours per day).
 

On the 1st day (23 September): Please meet at 9:00 at the MNHN in front of the class rooms, in front of the entemology building. Access by 43 rue Buffon 75005 Paris.

During the training you will have access to computers, optical lab equiment, and graphic supplies.

Software used: Affinity Photo, Designer, Inkscape.

Informations pratiques détaillées

Our teaching team will be present throughout to assure each student receives individualized attention. Following a brief introduction to the origin and evolution of scientific and natural history illustration, students will work on practical assignments to gain an understanding of foundational scientific illustration techniques. Step by step, they will work towards creating an illustration that conforms to preset scientific standards: scientific reports, publications, posters or presentations.

This course is open to all Institut Curie's employees

Priority will be given to candidates who have participated in the course "Drawing for biology and biophysics, step 1: how to make a sketch" in 2019.
