Science Communication & Outreach

Participants will learn about the importance of communicating knowledge to the wider public, understand the variety of ways of doing science communication, and build their own science communication strategy and toolbox. Through mini-lectures, group discussion, practical exercises, and self-refl ection, the workshop consists of six modules: (i) Introduction to Science Communication, (ii) Eff ective and Inclusive Communication (iii) Building My Science Communication Strategy and Toolbox, (iv) Public Speaking Fundamentals, (v) 1:1 Sessions, and (vi) My STEM Pitch & Strategy.

Objectives

The goal is for participants to understand key elements of science communication and learn how to improve and practice effective communication and outreach. Knowledge, tools, methods, and personal feedback are given.

Joana Bordalo | Modules (ii), (iii), (v), (vi)
Joana co-founded and leads a nationwide science outreach and educational programme at Native Scientists based on the concept of Circular Education and on the Science Capital Teaching Approach. She is a Master in Science Communication with a background in Biology and Music. Joana was awarded a Fulbright/FLAD scholarship to join a Science Communication Department at the University of Illinois (USA). She previously integrated a European project that promotes gender equality at Técnico ULisboa (Portugal). Joana is committed to improving educational opportunities and reducing inequalities through her work. She loves traveling and has lived in three different countries. She is also a cellist and is passionate about Nature, which is why she lives in the Azores Islands.

Joana is a former Life Scientist. She is part of MIT Innovator Under 35 and of the TOP 100 Women in Social Enterprise. Currently she is Co-founder and director of Native Scientist. And also co-founder and co-director of Chaperone.
