Developmental Biology

From Stem Cells to Morphogenesis

This intensive course combines theoretical and practical training to explore the fundamental concepts, challenges, and technologies of modern developmental biology. The program covers topics ranging from the regulation of gene expression and cellular interactions to the formation of a structured multicellular embryo. Participants are introduced to a variety of embryonic models, including genetic model organisms such as Drosophila, C. elegans, mouse, and zebrafish, as well as classical experimental embryology models including Xenopus and chicken. These models are studied using state-of-the-art methodologies and technologies.

Students can receive both theoretical (10 days of lectures) and experimental instruction (3 weeks of practical courses) addressing normal and pathological aspects of development. Of note, the 10 day lecture course can be taken on its own or in combination with the practical course. 

Lectures are delivered by internationally recognized researchers and address topics such as cell specification and differentiation, stem cell biology, morphogenesis and organogenesis, intracellular signaling, and the regulation of gene expression during development. 

The lecture series culminates in a 1.5-day international scientific conference dedicated to morphogenesis, providing many participants with the opportunity to attend their first scientific conference.

Objectives

The objective is to expose the students to the recent concepts developed in Developmental Biology by highlighting their important contribution to the stem cell field and clinical sciences. Various domains of the Developmental Biology field are addressed in relation across the variety of embryonic and adult tissues models and include a diversity of approaches (large-scale and translational approaches, mathematical modeling, biophysical approaches…).

For those obtaining credit a group oral presentation of an article and mock grant will be performed.

Applicants needing to request VISA to enter France are highly advised to apply by July 19th, 2026 and to mention this detail in the application. 

Practical classes will take place at Pierre and Marie Curie campus of Sorbonne University (9 quai Saint-Bernard - Building B).

Lectures & Seminars will take place at Institut Curie, building BDD.
